Lee Ables

Lee was born and raised in Southern Califronia. After taking early graduation from Washington High School in Los Angeles in 1944, he joined the navy and spent the war training to be a combat aircrewman at various Naval air stations until war was over. After being discharged from the service in the Summer of 1946, he started a rather checkered college career. After an on and off educational endeavor, he earned a B.A. in Art Education in 1956 to immediately start his career as an art teacher in Los Angeles City School System.

Upon earning tenure as an art teacher at South Gate High School, he took a leave of absence and moved to Hawaii where he lived for 34 years. Lee went back to school at the University of Hawaii and earned a M.F.A. in Painting in 1963 and went on to teach art at The Kamehameha Schools for the next 25 years. He later taught at Kapiolani Community College on Diamond Head in Honolulu.

While living in Hawaii, he became interested in sailing. This led to two voyages from Hawaii during the Summer months. One to San Diego and the other one to Acapulco, Mexico. As a teacher he was able to take two sabbatical leaves. In 1970, he enrolled in Graduate School at The Ohio State University to study Art Education. In 1978, he went to Europe for a year of traveling and painting.

Since 1959, Lee has been an actively producing professional artist. He holds membership in several professional organizations and is currently a juried member of the Arizona Artists Guild. His work has been juried in many Group Shows and has had solo exhibitions in Hawaii, Arizona, New York and Montreal, Canada.

Lee’s work is found in many private collections in Hawaii as well as in the mainland United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe. He is also represented in the collections of the University of Hawaii, The Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, and the City and County of Honolulu. In 2007, he was invited to exhibit his work at the Florence Biennale Internationale Exhibition of Contemporary Art in Florence, Italy.
